THE
FAMILY
LIBRARY
We were given a four-story building to redesign for a library. The project was located near a small central park in the heart of the valley in Quito, in a neighborhood called Cumbayá, a lively area that welcomes people of all ages at all times. I was inspired by the concept of family as the nucleus for my design.
Starting at the entrance, the library features a magazine lounge with a balcony and a children's playhouse with a backyard, creating a welcoming space for all family members. On the lower level, there is a cafeteria with a patio and a customer service area. The second floor houses the main library, and the top floor contains a map library and a computer area.
Given the building's long layout and limited natural light, with only two facades allowing light in from the front and back, I incorporated a skylight at the center of the library, with a small tree at its heart.
